Samsung Electronics has reported overheating in testing of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for the Galaxy S27 Ultra and asked Qualcomm to address thermal problems by mid-October before finalizing the processor choice, Seoul Economic Daily reported Oct. 16.
Internal tests found the chip repeatedly exceeded temperature thresholds under sustained heavy workloads, with processing speeds falling as a result, people familiar with the matter told SEDaily. Samsung passed those findings to Qualcomm last month. Both firms were still refining and retesting as the mid-October checkpoint arrived.
Qualcomm pushed back. In a SamMobile update, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Don McGuire called the overheating reports “100% NOT accurate.” SEDaily separately quoted Qualcomm saying the account was inaccurate and that it is working closely with global OEMs to deliver premium user experiences.
An Exynos-powered Galaxy S27 Ultra would mark the first return of Samsung’s in-house chip to its top model since the Galaxy S22 Ultra about five years earlier, SEDaily noted. The Exynos 2700 is designed by Samsung’s System LSI division and built on the company’s second-generation 2nm SF2P process. SamMobile said internal testing put Exynos performance on par with, or slightly better than, the Snapdragon option—without publishing a specific Geekbench margin.
Mass production of the Galaxy S27 series is slated for late 2026, with a lineup that includes the Galaxy S27, S27+, a rumored S27 Pro and the Ultra. SamMobile said the base models and Pro could use Exynos 2700 in most markets while the Ultra decision was still open in the SEDaily account: Snapdragon if thermals clear, otherwise Exynos to keep the schedule.
Korean business daily MoneyToday, in a separate Oct. 16 report summarized in English coverage, said Samsung’s DX division had already reversed a plan to put Exynos 2700 in the Ultra and would use Snapdragon exclusively, citing production capacity and memory-cost pressure. Those accounts conflict; neither company has announced a final Ultra chip choice publicly.
