SpaceX is reportedly interested in purchasing Boost Mobile, a move that could greatly accelerate its attempts to compete in the wireless market.

SpaceX has spent billions buying wireless spectrum, with the goal of launching Starlink Mobile to compete with traditional wireless carriers. Needless to say, launching a new wireless carrier is no small proposition, as Dish Network can attest to.

According to Engadget, citing The Washington Post, SpaceX may be looking to cut that startup time significantly with a potential Boost Mobile acquisition. Alternatively, Engadget reports that SpaceX may try to simply ink a deal granting access to Boost Mobile’s network.

Either option would be an interesting way for SpaceX to do an end-run around the big three carriers, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. Reports suggest that all three carriers have turned down overtures from SpaceX for access to their networks. Boost Mobile runs on T-Mobile and AT&T networks, essentially giving SpaceX potential access it couldn’t otherwise get.

However the company goes about it, SpaceX competing in the wireless space is sure to complicate its relationship with the existing companies. Some rely on Starlink for satellite calling and texting, but it’s unclear how comfortable the carriers will be relying on a direct competitor for that service.
