OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 Astra on September 3. The model immediately drew attention for two reasons. It posted record scores on tough benchmarks. And it became the first OpenAI system rated Critical under the company’s own cybersecurity preparedness rules.

That designation signals real risk. With the right tools, Astra can discover unknown flaws in hardened systems and craft exploits without step-by-step human direction. OpenAI responded by tightening controls. It limited full cyber features to select defenders. The company also added stricter monitoring, trajectory encryption, and alignment checks before internal use.

Yet the launch proceeded. Enterprises in the Trusted Access Program gained access first. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users follow in the coming days. The API and Amazon Bedrock opened to developers too. OpenAI’s safety overview lays out the trade-offs in plain terms.

Real-world deployments will test whether that speed advantage survives latency and edge cases.

Safety gains accompany the capability leap, yet questions linger.

OpenAI reports Astra refuses 91.5% of prohibited cyber requests compared with 59% for its predecessor. Jailbreak resistance improved across longer trajectories. Alignment evaluations show fewer flags for out-of-scope actions. In one internal simulation of more than 54,000 Codex tasks, misalignment incidents fell by half. The model also applies age-appropriate boundaries more consistently for younger users.

For now, Astra sets the frontier. It delivers unmatched performance on professional tasks while forcing the industry to confront what Critical cyber capability truly requires. Pricing at $10/$50 signals confidence in value delivered. Limited initial access reflects caution. The balance OpenAI struck will influence how competitors approach their own frontier releases in the quarters ahead.
