Google has spent billions building Gemini into the backbone of its artificial intelligence strategy, weaving the model into Android phones, search results, workspace tools, and standalone apps. The company envisions a future where Gemini serves as a personal assistant that manages your calendar, drafts your emails, controls your smart home, and anticipates your needs before you articulate them. There’s just one problem. Most people are using it to ask questions they could have typed into a search bar.
A survey conducted by Android Authority asked readers a straightforward question: What do you primarily use Gemini for? The results paint a picture that should give Google’s product strategists pause. Out of more than 7,500 respondents, the dominant use case wasn’t coding assistance, creative writing, or complex data analysis. It was answering general knowledge questions. A glorified search engine with a chatbot interface.
Roughly 36% of respondents said they use Gemini primarily for general knowledge and answering questions — the single largest category by a wide margin. The second most popular use case, creative writing and brainstorming, drew about 18% of responses. Coding and development came in third at approximately 14%. Everything else — summarizing content, work productivity, learning and education, image generation, personal assistant tasks — each captured single-digit shares of the vote.
That distribution tells a story Google probably doesn’t want to hear right now.
The company has been aggressively positioning Gemini as the successor to Google Assistant, pushing it as the default AI on Android devices and integrating it with Gmail, Google Docs, and other productivity tools. At Google I/O 2025 in May, the company showcased Gemini’s ability to act as an “agentic” AI — one that can take actions on your behalf, book reservations, shop online, and manage multi-step tasks across apps. CEO Sundar Pichai described the vision as moving from an AI that answers questions to one that gets things done.
But users, it seems, haven’t gotten the memo. Or they don’t care.
The Android Authority survey isn’t a scientific poll with randomized sampling. It’s a self-selected audience of tech-savvy Android enthusiasts — exactly the demographic most likely to push an AI tool to its limits. If even this group overwhelmingly defaults to using Gemini as a question-answering machine, the implications for mainstream adoption of advanced features are sobering. The average consumer who doesn’t read tech blogs is almost certainly using Gemini in even simpler ways, if they’re using it at all.
This pattern isn’t unique to Gemini. Data from competing platforms suggests the same gravitational pull toward basic query-answering across the AI assistant market. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Microsoft’s Copilot all see enormous volumes of straightforward informational queries — the kind of thing a well-constructed Google search would have resolved five years ago. The difference is that chatbots deliver answers in conversational prose rather than a ranked list of blue links, and users find that format more satisfying. It feels like talking to someone who knows things.
So why aren’t people using the more sophisticated capabilities?
Part of it is a discovery problem. Most users simply don’t know what Gemini can do. Google has added features at a pace that outstrips consumer awareness. Gemini can now analyze images, generate and edit photos, write and debug code, summarize lengthy documents, create structured study plans, and interact with Google’s full range of productivity apps through extensions. That’s a lot. And none of it matters if the user’s mental model of the tool is “a chatbot that answers my questions.”
There’s also a trust gap. The AI industry’s well-documented hallucination problem — where models confidently generate false information — has made users wary of relying on these tools for anything consequential. Asking Gemini to explain the plot of a movie or define a scientific term carries low stakes. Asking it to draft a legal contract or generate production-ready code carries high stakes. Users gravitate toward the low end.
Android Authority’s survey results also revealed that a meaningful slice of respondents — around 8% — said they don’t use Gemini at all. That’s notable given the publication’s readership skews heavily toward people who own Android devices where Gemini is now baked into the operating system. Google has made Gemini harder to avoid than to use, and still, a segment of engaged tech consumers actively ignores it.
The creative writing and brainstorming category at 18% is perhaps the most interesting signal in the data. It suggests that a substantial minority of users have found genuine utility beyond simple Q&A — they’re using Gemini as a thought partner, a way to overcome blank-page paralysis, or a tool for generating first drafts they can refine. This aligns with broader industry trends. Writers, marketers, and content creators have become some of the most engaged users of generative AI tools, not because the output is perfect but because the output is fast.
Coding and development at 14% also tracks with what other platforms report. Software developers were among the earliest adopters of AI assistants, using tools like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT to accelerate routine programming tasks. Gemini competes in this space with its code generation capabilities and integration into Google’s development tools, though it faces stiff competition from specialized coding assistants.
The personal assistant category — the very thing Google is betting Gemini’s future on — registered at just 5% in the survey. Five percent. Google is pouring resources into making Gemini the brain of your digital life, capable of managing tasks, setting reminders, controlling smart home devices, and coordinating across apps. And roughly one in twenty power users actually uses it that way.
This gap between corporate vision and user behavior isn’t unprecedented in tech. Apple launched Siri in 2011 with a demo that showed it booking restaurants and checking the weather through natural conversation. Fourteen years later, most people use Siri to set timers and play music. Amazon pitched Alexa as a platform for thousands of third-party “skills” that would turn your Echo into a command center. Studies consistently showed people used it for weather, timers, and playing songs. The pattern repeats because the pattern is human nature: people find the simplest valuable function of a tool and stick with it.
Google’s challenge is that simple question-answering is a commodity. Every major AI lab offers a chatbot that can answer general knowledge questions competently. If that’s all most users want from Gemini, Google’s competitive moat is thin — essentially limited to distribution advantages through Android and Chrome. The real differentiation, the reason to choose Gemini over ChatGPT or Claude, has to come from deeper integration with Google services and more sophisticated agentic capabilities. But users aren’t there yet.
Recent moves suggest Google understands the urgency. At I/O 2025, the company announced Project Astra, an advanced AI agent that uses your phone’s camera and microphone to understand context and take action in the real world. It demonstrated Gemini booking flights, comparing products across shopping sites, and managing complex multi-step workflows without user intervention at each stage. The demos were impressive. They always are.
The question is whether real users will adopt these capabilities or whether they’ll continue treating Gemini as a conversational search engine that’s slightly more pleasant than typing queries into a box. History suggests the latter, at least for the next several years. Behavioral change is slow. Users need repeated, low-friction demonstrations of value before they expand their usage patterns. And they need to trust that the AI won’t botch something important.
Google also faces a timing problem. The company is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android devices, a transition that has frustrated some users who relied on Assistant’s mature, well-understood feature set. Google Assistant was excellent at device-level commands — setting alarms, making calls, toggling settings. Gemini is better at generating text and answering complex questions but has been inconsistent at some of the basic tasks Assistant handled reliably. Users who lost functionality they depended on aren’t inclined to explore new capabilities they didn’t ask for.
The broader AI industry is watching this dynamic closely. Billions of dollars in venture capital and corporate R&D spending rest on the assumption that AI assistants will eventually permeate every aspect of daily life and work. But the Android Authority data, limited as it is, reinforces a growing concern: the gap between what AI can do and what people actually want it to do remains wide. And closing that gap requires more than better models. It requires changing habits.
That’s the hardest engineering problem of all. Not building intelligence. Building relevance.
For now, most people will keep asking Gemini questions. Simple ones. And Google will keep building features most of them never touch, hoping that one day the vision catches up with reality — or, more precisely, that reality catches up with the vision.
