In the film, socialite sisters Mattie and Tinsley Wilde are thrown out of high society and into the Oregon wilderness during the Great Depression, forced to fend for themselves among wild animals, hitmen, and one very grumpy mountain man named Silas. As director Timothy Hines puts it, the film was born from memories of his own family’s survival stories during the Depression. “My mother literally slept in a lean-to with a canvas sheet in a rut,” Hines recounts. “I’ve always wanted to tell the story of these spoiled heiresses tossed into that kind of world. At first, it was cartoonish—but the characters grew into something deeper.”

The in-depth feature details how Hines’ childhood recordings of his parents’ tales of forest survival—like his mother’s sharpshooting skills and his father’s legendary bear encounter—informed pivotal scenes in the film. “That scene where Silas fights off a bear with a knife? Teddy Smith, who plays Silas, added, “I’m a New Yorker, not exactly the outdoorsy type. But Tim pulled a mountain man out of me. Though when a snake slid over to me during filming—I screamed like a little girl.”
