Fast production recovery in Zhejiang as demand for skilled labor surges

Zhejiang province has witnessed a rapid recovery in production capacity since the Chinese New Year holiday, with industrial production levels reaching 106.3 percent of that in the same period last year, according to Zhejiang Daily.

Among the top 10 largest manufacturing industries in Zhejiang, nine are currently operating over maximum capacity. The rapid recovery in production levels is particularly strong in emerging industries such as electrical machinery, communication electronics, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals.

The stable recovery of production has created a greater demand for labor. Data shows that as of Feb 15 this year, over 22.60 million workers from other provinces were employed in Zhejiang, an increase of 447,400 compared to the end of last year. Of these workers, about 18.99 million were already working in Zhejiang in 2022, while more than 3.62 million came to work in the province after the Chinese New Year.

Meanwhile, Zhejiang’s continuous upgrading of its manufacturing industries means more skilled employees are needed. According to a survey conducted by the provincial Economy and Information Technology Department on key industrial enterprises, 48.7 percent of the respondents indicated that they are currently facing or expect to face a labor shortage in the short term. Among these companies, 4.2 percent said over 30 percent of their job openings will remain unfilled.

“With industrial upgrading, we now urgently need talents in the fields of hydrogen energy, energy storage, sodium electricity, as well as intelligent manufacturing and digitalization,” said Lin Jing, who is in charge of recruitment at Tianneng Holding Group, a battery manufacturer based in Changxing county, Huzhou.

In Changxing, the average monthly salary for frontline workers in these industries ranges from 6,000 to 8,000 yuan ($870.72 to $1,160.97), according to Changxing’s human resources and social security bureau. Some can earn as much as 18,000 yuan every month.
