A wave of AI-generated images and videos depicting fabricated scenes of a U.S.-Iran war has overtaken X, formerly Twitter, racking up millions of views and exposing the platform’s ongoing inability to handle synthetic misinformation at scale. The timing isn’t coincidental. It follows rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and bad actors are exploiting the moment for engagement, profit, and influence.

According to a detailed investigation by WIRED, AI-generated content showing fake explosions, fabricated military strikes, and entirely fictional war scenes has spread rapidly across X. Some posts have garnered tens of millions of impressions. Many of the accounts posting this material appear to be monetized through X’s creator revenue-sharing program — meaning they’re literally getting paid to spread fake content.

That’s the core problem here.

X’s Monetization Model Is Fueling the Fire

Elon Musk’s decision to share ad revenue with creators based on engagement metrics has created a direct financial incentive to produce viral content, regardless of accuracy. Sensational AI-generated war imagery — dramatic, emotionally charged, and easy to produce — is tailor-made for this system.
