Charlottesville, VA – January 6, 2023 – Dr. John Vitarello is fellow of cardiovascular disease at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Dr. Vitarello is committed to helping his patients improve their quality of life and his research has been published in various peer-reviewed journals. In a recent online interview, he takes the time to discuss his path to professional success while highlighting his plans for practicing preventive cardiology.
“I have a vision of starting a cardiometabolic clinic with a focus on addressing people’s risk factors for heart disease, including obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Preventative Cardiology is not the most popular subspecialty, but it’s certainly one that deserves more attention. We can make a difference in someone’s life before they’ve suffered any serious consequences. Prevention is better than waiting for a problem to develop that causes them to lose their quality of life.”
Having worked as a research assistant at Comprehensive Weight Control Center (CWCC) Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Vitarello is passionate about helping patients treat obesity in order to improve their cardiovascular health.
When asked, “What is something that you know is true that few people would agree with you on?” He states, “I believe that weight loss medications have an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease. Doctors were hesitant to prescribe weight loss medication after Phen-Fen (phentermine/fenfluramine), the popular weight loss medication of the 90s caused heart problems and high blood pressure. Fortunately, the FDA now requires that pharmaceutical companies monitor the effects of weight loss medications, even after they’re released. It’s time we start treating obesity using our growing armamentarium of weight loss drugs. We owe it to patients to help them lose weight, and to protect parts of their health like cardiovascular disease.”
