AI Tools Spark Surge in Custom Firmware for Music Hardware

Hobbyist developers are using AI coding assistants to build custom firmware for synthesizers, samplers, grooveboxes and effects pedals, and the releases have piled up since September. The Verge reported on Monday, Oct. 19, that almost all of the new firmware was made possible by vibe-coding tools.

Before large language models, such mods were rare. They took deep expertise, and adding a simple feature like velocity sensitivity to a Korg Volca could take weeks or months, according to The Verge. Now hobbyists can turn cheap synths into full grooveboxes in a matter of days.

Elektron’s Model:Cycles, Digitone, Octatrack and Digitakt have all gained features with help from Claude. Roland’s SP-404 MKII, Ableton’s Push 3 and Move, Akai’s MPC Live, MPC One and vintage MPC 2000, Novation’s Circuit, Arturia’s MicroFreak and Zoom’s 14-year-old MultiStomp pedal line have also seen custom firmware released in the last month or so.

The busiest target is the M-Vave FM-1, a $70 Yamaha DX7 clone that now has dozens of custom firmwares. Many of the most popular, including Felucca, Sloop and x0x, list Claude as a contributor on their GitHub pages or disclose their use of AI.

18nelli, the developer behind the Modded Cycles firmware, said the Model:Cycles left him frustrated and hasn’t had an official update since May 2021. He worked with Claude Code to add six-track audio over USB as his first hack. “I think not using LLMs would have been counterproductive,” he told The Verge.

How AI changed the work

Music-tech site Dubspot audited 23 active code repositories in the scene and found that 18 were created on or after September 12, 2026. Nine of the 23 include agent instruction files such as CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md. According to Dubspot, AI agents can scan thousands of decompiled functions in minutes, label symbols and draft hooks, work that once took specialists months of hand disassembly. Community-built emulators let an agent compile a patch, boot the real firmware on a desktop and check for crashes without risking hardware.

Most mods use a “bring your own firmware” patcher: the user drops an official OS file into a browser tool that patches it locally, so projects never redistribute the manufacturer’s copyrighted code. Several projects still warn users not to share their compiled files online.

Manufacturers split

On September 16, Elektron banned sharing firmware mod files, tools, repositories and step-by-step instructions on its Elektronauts forum and social channels, though general discussion is still allowed. “Something that looks like a simple change in isolation can lead to major problems elsewhere, particularly when a later official OS arrives, and can confuse users about which features are officially available on our machines,” the company said in a forum statement quoted by The Verge.

Most of the projects are alpha or beta releases, and their legal status depends on local copyright and anti-circumvention rules, Dubspot noted. A community list on GitHub, awesome-music-gear-firmware, now catalogs hundreds of firmware projects, tools and research repos across brands.

M-Vave has gone the other way. It recently announced FM1 Open, an open-source firmware for the FM-1 with extra features, plus a development kit and a firmware-flashing tool for the community.
