The Food and Drug Administration delivered a significant update to diabetes care on August 25, 2026. It authorized Abbott Diabetes Care’s Libre Duo 10 Day Continuous Dual Glucose Ketone Monitoring System. This marks the first wearable approved in the U.S. to track ketone levels continuously. It also stands as the first device anywhere to measure both ketones and glucose in one sensor.
People with diabetes have long juggled glucose checks. For many, especially those with type 1, the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis adds another layer of worry. Ketones build when the body breaks down fat for fuel instead of glucose. Levels can climb fast. Left unchecked, they trigger DKA. That condition sends thousands to hospitals each year. It can turn deadly within hours.
The FDA’s announcement highlights the gap this device fills. Until now, ketone testing meant separate blood or urine checks. Those offered one snapshot. No trend. No alert. The Libre Duo changes that. It samples interstitial fluid every minute. Data flows to a smartphone app. Users see both readings and their direction. Rising ketones trigger an automatic alert.
“Today’s authorization is a breakthrough for the safety of children and adults living with diabetes,” said Michelle Tarver, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Knowing that ketone levels are rising, and having that information in real time, around the clock, can be the difference between early intervention and a life-threatening emergency.”
The numbers tell a stark story. Roughly 40.1 million Americans have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 2.1 million live with type 1. Abbott’s dual glucose-ketone system is meaningful because ketone data is collected in the background, helping provide earlier awareness of rising ketone levels.”
The device targets those at higher risk. This includes people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes on insulin or certain oral medications such as SGLT2 inhibitors. It carries approval down to age 2. Abbott designed a 10-day wear version partly because active children sometimes struggle with longer sensors. Data from earlier European approvals informed that choice. The company secured CE Mark for dual versions earlier in 2026. European launches began in select markets this year.
Integration sits at the heart of practical use. The sensor pairs with the latest Libre app. That platform already serves millions. Data can flow to LibreView for clinicians and LibreLinkUp for caregivers. Trends appear clearly. Alerts sound when ketones climb. Yet the company stresses context. Ketone readings must pair with glucose values and symptoms. The system does not replace medical judgment.
Compatibility with automated insulin delivery systems adds future value. Abbott works with several pump makers. Beta Bionics’ iLet and Sequel Med Tech’s twiist should connect by the end of 2026. Insulet and Tandem devices follow in 2027. A collaboration with Medtronic’s MiniMed line targets the same timeframe. Such links could let pumps adjust insulin based on both signals. That remains in development. But the pathway exists.
Market reaction came swiftly. Shares of Abbott ticked higher in afternoon trading. Analysts see the approval as validation of the company’s diabetes franchise. The FreeStyle Libre line already reaches more than 8 million users across 60 countries. This extension builds directly on that base. It adds a new analyte without forcing users onto an entirely different platform.
Broader context matters. The FDA cleared an over-the-counter glucose monitor for adults without diabetes the day before. Interest in metabolic tracking grows. Wearables that once seemed niche now appear in routine conversations. Yet regulators draw firm lines. They warned against smartwatches or rings that claim to measure glucose without a skin puncture. Those lack authorization and can mislead. The Libre Duo uses an established electrochemical method. It pierces the skin with a filament. Data comes from interstitial fluid. Accuracy has limits. Users should confirm unusual readings with a fingerstick when symptoms don’t match.

Launch plans call for U.S. availability later in 2026. Pricing and insurance coverage details have not emerged. Reimbursement will decide speed of adoption. Many payers already cover standard CGMs for qualifying patients. Adding ketone data may strengthen the case. Hospitals could see fewer DKA admissions. Emergency visits might drop. Long-term studies will test those hopes.
Challenges remain. Skin irritation can occur with any wearable sensor. Accuracy in very young children or during extreme exercise needs real-world confirmation. The 10-day limit requires discipline. Users must remember to change sensors. False alerts could cause anxiety. Or users might grow numb to them. Education will prove essential.
Still, the approval lands at a moment of rising expectations. Diabetes technology has advanced from fingersticks to continuous glucose data. Now it adds metabolic insight in the same package. The Libre Duo doesn’t eliminate risk. No device can. But it hands patients and doctors information once available only in scattered tests. That shift could prove meaningful. For some, it may buy precious hours. For families, it may reduce constant vigilance. Time will reveal the full effect.
And the timing feels deliberate. The FDA links the decision to its Home as a Health Care Hub Initiative. That effort pushes devices that fit daily life rather than clinical settings. A small patch on the arm. A glance at the phone. Data shared without clinic visits. The Libre Duo fits the vision. Whether it accelerates broader change depends on execution. Abbott must deliver reliable supply. Clinicians must embrace the dual output. Patients must trust the alerts.
One thing stands clear today. The bar for ketone monitoring just moved. What once required deliberate effort now happens automatically. The check-engine light stays on. Drivers—patients—get notice before the engine fails. In diabetes, that notice can save lives. The FDA bet this device delivers it.
