The contiguous United States just logged its hottest month since records began in 1895. July 2026 averaged 76.9 degrees Fahrenheit across the Lower 48. That figure edges out the Dust Bowl July of 1936 by a narrow but decisive margin. And it marks not only the warmest July but the single warmest month of any kind in the 132-year dataset maintained by federal scientists.

Numbers from the National Centers for Environmental Information tell a stark story. The average stood 3.3 degrees above the 20th-century norm. Daytime highs averaged 89.5 degrees. Lows hit 64.2 degrees, a full 3.7 degrees above normal and 0.7 degrees warmer than the previous record for minimum temperatures set in 2022. Minimum temperatures drove much of the anomaly. Every single state in the contiguous U.S. ranked in the warmest third of its historical July records. None came in near or below average. Thirteen states posted top-five finishes for the month. Wyoming claimed the strongest outlier, averaging 5.1 degrees above its own long-term norm and besting its prior July record from 2007 by 0.9 degrees. But averages only hint at the lived experience. Heat domes settled over large swaths of the country in early and mid-July. More than 185 million people faced alerts at various points. Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington all canceled outdoor events. Salt Lake City reached 109 degrees on July 12. All-time high temperature marks fell across Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. Lewis Lake Divide in Yellowstone National Park hit 102 degrees, shattering its 1989 record by 8 degrees.

The CBS News account described July as “a wild weather month.” That characterization fits. While overall precipitation came in below average, ranking in the driest third of the historical record, pockets of extreme rain produced flash flooding in Texas Hill Country and eastern New York. Drought conditions gripped 48.5 percent of the contiguous U.S. by early August, up slightly from the end of June. Persistent dryness across the West, Southwest and Rockies expanded into the Northwest, Plains and Upper Midwest. Puerto Rico saw more than two-thirds of its territory in drought, prompting water rationing in San Juan.

Dry heat also fed wildfires. Eastern Oregon alone saw more than 140,000 acres burn during the month. The combination of record warmth and below-normal rainfall created conditions ripe for rapid fire spread.

Yet this wasn’t an isolated American event. Globally, July 2026 tied for the second-warmest on record according to NOAA data. The World Meteorological Organization warned that above-normal temperatures are likely to persist for the next several months, driven in part by lingering El Niño effects and unprecedented ocean heat. Researchers have repeatedly linked the rise in extreme heat events to human-caused climate change. The Wall Street Journal noted that daytime maximums averaged nearly 90 degrees while the monthly mean sat more than three degrees above the 20th-century benchmark. Such shifts carry real consequences for public health, energy demand, agriculture and infrastructure.

Critics on platforms like X question the data adjustments NOAA applies. Some argue that changes to station networks, urban heat influences and homogenization methods inflate recent trends while cooling the distant past. Meteorologist Chris Martz posted analysis suggesting rural-only stations show stronger early-20th-century peaks. These debates persist in scientific circles even as surface observations continue to break thresholds.

The record arrives amid broader warnings. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts elevated chances of above-average temperatures across most of the continental U.S. through August. Some analysts suggest 2026 could challenge for the hottest year globally. Earlier this summer, forecasters had already signaled a hot season ahead.

Looking back, the 1936 benchmark occurred during one of the most severe heat waves in U.S. history. That era saw widespread drought and agricultural collapse across the Great Plains. Alaska, by contrast, experienced its coolest July since 2008. Hawaii fell in the middle third of its records. These pockets of relative coolness stand out against the nationwide blanket of heat. They underscore the uneven distribution of climate signals even within a single month.

So what happens next? August forecasts point to continued heat across much of the country. The combination of La Niña development later in the year with elevated greenhouse gas concentrations could shape the remainder of 2026 and beyond. Public officials, utilities and emergency managers already adjust plans around longer, stronger heat waves.

The data from July won’t fade quickly. It adds to a lengthening string of broken records that scientists monitor with growing precision. Whether policy responses follow remains an open question. For now, the thermometer has delivered its verdict. The contiguous U.S. just lived through a month without modern precedent. And the mechanisms driving such outcomes show no sign of reversing on their own.
