Political figures caught in compromising situations can claim the images are fake. Documented human rights abuses can be waved away as synthetic media. This is not a future scenario; it is already happening. In conflicts around the world, all sides have accused opponents of using AI-generated imagery, making it harder for journalists, investigators, and the public to determine what is real. The International Criminal Court and various United Nations bodies have flagged the authentication of digital evidence as a growing operational challenge.
The Uncomfortable Truth About Convenience
Perhaps the most uncomfortable aspect of this situation is that consumers, by and large, love these features. Magic Eraser is one of Google’s most popular Pixel selling points. Samsung’s generative editing tools have been widely praised in reviews. People enjoy being able to remove a photobomber, fix a closed eye, or enhance a dimly lit scene. The demand is real, and no manufacturer is going to voluntarily disable features that drive hardware sales.
This creates a tension that the technology industry has not yet resolved: how to give consumers the editing power they want while preserving the evidentiary value that society needs photographs to have.
